I first learned how to sew by hand with my girl scout troop when I was 6 years old. When my mom got her old singer sewing machine fixed 8 years later I took the opportunity to expand my sewing skills. I made dresses for my Barbie dolls, scarves for my dad and mom, and blankets for my younger brothers.
This past January while home from college and with a plethora of free time, I decided to undertake a project I had never done before: making a pair of pants.
This past summer, there was a trend where people made pants out of towels to wear over their swimsuits. I figured as the weather slowly got colder and my jeans became less and less warm, this quilt would make the coziest pair of pants.
After making my own pattern using my favorite pair of jeans, I successfully made my first pair of pants. However, when I went to show my family my dad and brothers found them very funny, in fact they could not stop laughing.
Still I was proud of my creation and wore them to class when I returned to school, pushing aside my fear of judgement. The entire day I received compliments on my pants.
Push your fear aside. Wear your patterned pants.
