I didn’t think I was old enough yet to exclaim “wow, that wasn’t here before,” as I walk through my hometown
Apparently, I was wrong.
But being wrong feels a lot better when I’m staring at the most gorgeous desserts I’ve ever seen through a fancy glass case, at a new pastry store in town.
MK Cannell, an artisanal pastry store with multiple locations throughout Southeast Michigan looks fit for New York City, maybe Paris, but not my small town of Northville. With its golden mood lighting, wooden light fixtures, jazz music and complimentary lemon-infused water, I felt like I had entered a luxury hotel lobby.
Behind an extensive glass case sat spongy chocolate cakes with dollops of creamy chocolate frosting, puff pastry topped with berries and figs, and a glossy, bright green and red pistachio-flavored dessert in the shape of a kidney.
My mom and I stood awestruck in front of the colorful display case. An employee asked us if we wanted to order anything. I told her I needed time to stare a little longer.
Too hungry to keep admiring, mom and I strategized on how to figure out the names of these treats. There were signs, but only a few. Would it be acceptable to say, “can I have that red and yellow looking thing?” It was a risk we were willing to take.
A risk well worth it, as mom and I successfully navigated to the check out with a prince noir chocolate cake, a lemon raspberry cake, and a chocolate croissant for good measure.
Upon arriving home, I jogged into the kitchen, tore the pastry box out of the bag, and went looking for a fork. My mom had already started eating pieces off the top of the pastries.
“Wait!” I shouted. “I need a picture.”
