Recovering Ohio’s Indigenous Voices
October 14 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The Great Circle Alliance welcomes three talented artists from Ohio’s Removed Tribes, Holli Margell (Eastern Shawnee), Dani Tippman (Miami) and Travis Mammedaty (Seneca- Cayuga.) Join us on Indigenous Peoples Day 2024 as the visiting artists share their artistic practices, expressions of their tribal traditions, values, and cultural background.
• Holli Margell (Eastern Shawnee) has sustained her tribal connections while living in Seattle. Her photography reveals compelling images of Native Americans and is reminiscent of the work of another Native American artist, Wendy Red Star, who Holli has collaborated with.
•Travis Mammedaty’s (Seneca-Cayuga) artwork tells the stories of his ancestors, using acrylics and oils to describe their cultural pathways . Since childhood Travis has participated in ceremonies in the Longhouse. He lives in Oklahoma, teaching the Kiowa language, studying Cayuga and sharing traditional singing in the Plains style.
• Dani Tippman (Miami) embeds in her basketry the beauty and traditions she learned from her elders. She speaks about traditional native plants used in storytelling, food, medicine and technology and about traditional Myaamia life-ways, culture and history.
While in Ohio the artists will visit and reconnect with the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks and other significant sites in Ohio, as part of an early program in Ohio’s America 250 Celebrations. Later they will create artwork as a personal response to reconnecting to their homelands.
Holli, Dani and Travis’s tribal homelands remain in Ohio despite all tribes being removed in the 1830’s as a direct result of the Indian Removal Act. Recovering the Ohio River Valley’s ‘first’ voices encourages and supports new life and perspec.ves around the state’s important early history. With the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks recently designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites Ohio’s rich Na.ve American legacy is being highlighted. The Great Circle Alliance aims to restore the voices and presence of Ohio’s original Tribal Nations through experiencing and sharing their personal artistry and stories.
The public presentation is October 14, 2024, 7:00 p.m. Bryn Du Mansion, Granville, OH. Please REGISTER www.bryndu.com/event-details-registration/life-local-recovering-ohios-indigenous- voices-panel-discussion to reserve your seat for this free event.
