By the time early, in-person voting ended at 5 p.m. on Sunday, 5,197 ballots had been cast at the Licking County Board of Elections office in downtown Newark.

“Sunday was shortest day in terms of hours and the second-highest in number of voters,” said Tess Wigginton, deputy director of the elections board. “Friday was higher in the number of voters, but we were open for nine hours. We had a line to start the day on Sunday and didn’t clear it until around 3 p.m., and then it was steady after that until 5 p.m.”

Wigginton estimated that about 30,000 of the about 128,000 registered voters will cast ballots in this election, which would be a turnout of a little over 20%.

She said about 3,000 Licking County residents requested mail-in ballots, which had to be postmarked by Nov. 3 and must arrive at the elections board office, 20 S. 2nd St. in Newark by 4 p.m. on Saturday. Anyone who has a mail-in ballot and wants to drop it off in person must do so at the elections board office by the time the polls close at 7:30 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Election Day

The polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 4. You can keep up with what’s happening at local polling places by checking in with live, Election Day updates from The Reporting Project.

You can find your polling place and see if you’re registered by going to this page on the Licking County Board of Elections site and typing in your name: https://lookup.boe.ohio.gov/vtrapp/licking/vtrlookup.aspx

The voting locations in Licking County typically don’t change from election to election, but for this election, one polling place has moved. The Granville Village precincts that typically are located at First Presbyterian Church will be across the N. Main Street at Centenary United Methodist Church.

At the polling place, you will be required to show valid identification before voting. Acceptable forms of ID are a driver’s license or Ohio-issued state identification card, an interim ID card from the state, a U.S. passport or passport card, a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs ID card, a U.S. Military or Military Dependent card, or an Ohio National Guard ID card. Digital IDs are not accepted, nor are any state driver’s licenses stamped with “non-renewable, non-transferable” or “noncitizen.”

The county is using electronic pollbooks to check in voters for this election, unlike during the spring primary election, and Wigginton said that should expedite checking in. She said that all 387 poll workers were trained in the past month for their jobs on Election Day.

In August, elections board members Kaye Hartman, Park Shai and David Rhodes unanimously certified 39 candidates for municipal offices in Licking County, 68 candidates for township offices and 37 candidates for school board seats.

A total of 25 local issues will appear on the Nov. 4 ballot, including a request for a half-percent increase in the Newark income tax to 2.25 percent and a request to renew a countywide property tax – 1 mill for 10 years – for community addiction services and community mental health services.

In a closely watched race for two seats on the Etna Township board of trustees – one of which is incumbent Mark Evans, who has been a controversial figure on the township board – the elections board rejected the petitions of Kenneth Starkey and Robert Stewart. Starkey was missing a cover page on a set of signatures and incorrectly stated the total number of signatures, and Stewart didn’t record the number of signatures on his petitions, which is required by state law, Elections Board Director Brian Mead said during the August elections board meeting.

Evans and incumbent Rozland McKee are being challenged in Etna Township by former trustee John J. Carlisle, as well as Ryan Davis, David B. Fulmer, Litichia Dawn McIntyre and Rachel Zelazny.

Write-in candidates had until Aug. 25 to file for the Nov. 4 election. Candidates who have filed as write-ins to date are Kip Rooks and Chad Wagy for Pataskala City Council, Chonlatit Andy Sirisukha for Buckeye Lake Village Council, Michael Briggs for Licking Township trustee, and incumbent Jeffrey Schrock for Northridge Board of Education.

After certification by the elections board on Aug. 18, here are the candidates and the issues that appear on the Nov. 4 ballot in Licking County. (Addresses of candidates represent mailing addresses. Write-in candidates listed here will not appear on the ballot but have filed to run for the office and may be written in by voters in those jurisdictions.):
