It’s the day before I’m expected back at college. My mom and I stared at the trunk of my car, trying to fit the boxes in perfectly. All the important things — yarn for crochet projects and posters for my wall — fit like a game of Tetris. Then I hear the jingle of a bell and the pitter patter of little paws. I turn to see my tortoiseshell cat Bobbi coming to greet me. She hops up into the trunk of my car, her eyes begging me to take her with me.
She hangs around when I pack the car, scratching her back on the driveway and bathing in the sunlight.
She’s a smart cat. Sometimes I feel she knows when I’m returning to college. She lays with me more often then.
She gives me a sweet comforting nudge then runs back to her spot of sunlight. I smile at her while she enjoys the warmth.
