ARTS | Granville | Brian Harnetty: Words and Silences – MultiMedia Performance

September 28, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join the Granville Center for the Arts, for a truly unforgettable experience as we showcase the one-of-a-kind live multimedia performance of “WORDS AND SILENCES,” created by the acclaimed composer and sound artist Brian Harnetty.

Immerse yourself in the ethereal ambiance of our gallery, where Brian will grace the piano with his unparalleled talent, intertwining his melodies with the resonant voice of the iconic Thomas Merton. As you listen, you’ll be transported through time and space, privy to Merton’s most intimate thoughts, his musings on Samuel Beckett, Sufi mystics, the profound echoes of the 1967 Louisville racial protests, and the deep insights of Michel Foucault.

Gaze upon the gallery walls as they come alive with contemporary visuals, a mesmerizing tapestry of Merton’s hermitage in the heart of Kentucky. This breathtaking backdrop provides a contemplative canvas for Merton’s profound philosophies and Brian’s evocative compositions.

BRIAN HARNETTY (American, b. 1973) is an interdisciplinary sound artist and composer who uses listening to foster social change. He is known for his recording projects with archives, socially engaged sound works, sound and video installations, live performances, and writings. His interdisciplinary approach has been compared to “working like a novelist…breathing new life into old chunks of sound by radically recontextualizing them” (Clive Bell, The Wire).

Mix and Mingle from 6:30 pm – 7:00pm followed by a live performance from 7:00 – 7:45/8:00 pm.

Admission is FREE, but registration through Eventbrite is appreciated!
